Disability Insurance:
Short Term Disability (STD) and Long Term Disability (LTD) Insurance provide an income replacement benefit in the event an employee is unable to work because of an eligible disability.
Coverage Highlights:
- Employees may choose to enroll in LTD only or to enroll in both STD and LTD. (To enroll in STD, employees must also be enrolled in LTD.)
- Both policies provide income replacement of 60% up to a maximum ($5,000 per week for STD and $25,000 per month for LTD).
- Benefits are only payable when the employee is residing in the United States or Canada. Employees who would reside in another country if they became disabled should not enroll in this insurance.
- The period of time that an employee must be continuously disabled before benefits become payable (benefit waiting period) for STD is 90 days and 180 days for LTD. Benefits begin at the end of the benefit waiting period or once the employee has exhausted all sick leave accruals, whichever occurs later.
- An employee is considered disabled under the policy if, as a result of physical disease, injury, pregnancy or mental health condition:
- The employee is unable to perform with reasonable continuity the material duties of their own occupation, during the first two years of disability; thereafter, unable to perform with reasonable continuity the material duties of any occupation for which the employee is qualified by education, training, or experience; or
- The employee suffers a loss of at least 20 percent of their predisability earnings when working in their own occupation.
- Practicing Physicians are enrolled in a separate class of coverage that defines disability as their own occupation (specialty specific may apply) for the entire disability period.
- STD does not cover occupational illnesses or injuries (workers compensation [link to the new workers comp page] would cover these types of illnesses and injuries); LTD does cover occupational illnesses or injuries.
- See the policy certificate for detailed information, limitations and exclusions.
Premiums:
- Premiums vary based on the employee’s job, monthly compensation and University-funded retirement plan in which the employee is enrolled.
- The University makes a contribution toward the LTD premium for faculty and staff (other than practicing physicians and UUMG Attending Faculty) of $8 per month for full-time or $4 per month for part-time.
- See the rate calculation sheet to estimate monthly premiums.
Housestaff (GME Interns, Residents and Fellows) Policy:
House Staff employees, including interns, residents, and fellows in Graduate Medical Education Approved Programs have a separate disability policy.
- House Staff employees are automatically enrolled.
- Disability insurance is paid in full by the GME Office.
